Bella Caesaris: Julius Caesar's Wars (Latin Edition)

Bella Caesaris brings together the complete surviving Caesarian campaign narrative tradition in a single Latin reading edition. The volume contains Julius Caesar’s Commentarii de Bello Gallico and De Bello Civili, the eighth book of the Gallic War by Aulus Hirtius, and the anonymous continuations Bellum Alexandrinum, Bellum Africanum, and Bellum Hispaniense.

Together these works trace Caesar’s campaigns from the conquest of Gaul through the collapse of the Roman Republic and the civil wars that carried his armies across Greece, Egypt, Africa, and Spain. The edition preserves the distinct authorship of the corpus rather than presenting every work indiscriminately under Caesar’s name: Books I–VII of the Gallic War and the Civil War are Caesar’s; Book VIII of the Gallic War is by Hirtius; the Alexandrian, African, and Spanish Wars are transmitted anonymously.

The Latin text has been newly typeset and systematically verified against public-domain scholarly editions, including the Oxford Classical Texts of T. Rice Holmes and Renatus Du Pontet. The three later continuations have likewise been proofread and corrected against Du Pontet’s printed text, while genuine non-Caesarian linguistic features have been preserved rather than artificially regularized.

Designed for sustained reading as well as study, this edition includes an extensive intermediate Latin glossary and dedicated indexes of names, peoples, and places.
