In Isagogen Porphyrii: Commentaria Boethii cum Textu Porphyriano (Latin Edition)

Boethius’s two commentaries on Porphyry’s Isagoge stand at the beginning of the Latin medieval tradition of logic and metaphysics. Written as guides to one of antiquity’s most influential introductions to Aristotelian logic, they examine the five predicables—genus, species, difference, property, and accident—and introduce the questions that would later shape the medieval controversy over universals.

This edition presents Porphyry’s Isagoge together with both of Boethius’s commentaries, arranged so that the Porphyrian text can be read directly alongside Boethius’s exposition. The result allows the reader to follow the progression from Porphyry’s concise logical definitions to Boethius’s fuller treatment of predication, definition, division, substance, accident, and the relation between sensible things and intelligible universals.
